I’m frequently involved in the development of new Australian writing, working with peak organisations like Playwriting Australia, Belvoir St Theatre, Melbourne Theatre Company, Lonely Company, Arena Theatre and New Working Group.

My most recent collaboration is with composer/lyricist Vidya Makan on our smash hit new Australian musical, The Lucky Country (see Directing page for more detail). I am also currently working with The People on a new devised work, Peacemongers, for Darebin Arts Speakeasy.

I have curated programs for several institutions and grass-roots organisations including the Centre for Theatre and Performance (Monash University), Watch This and Poppy Seed Festival.

"Poppy Seed gave us the impetus and support to realise our production of The Yellow Wave, which has since gone on to enjoy two Melbourne revivals, a regional tour in partnership with RAV and a spot on the 2017 VCE Theatre Studies Playlist. As a founding Festival Director, Sonya worked tirelessly and industriously to champion the program. Moreover, her expertise was critical to securing the resources that made this important initiative possible."

“Sonya [is] a sharp dramaturgical mind, a capable producer, and advocate for change … This point in her career is the perfect time for her to be generating and leading a distinct new body of signature works for the Australian stage.”
